#8 - Part 3

After Topper's bloodless body is discovered
the next day, Jack tries to convince Nick
not to blame himself for failing to provide
the homeless man with a place to sleep for
the night. When Schanke attempts to link
Topper's death to the presence of the blood
mobile reported in the area earlier, Nick
doesn't want to hear it. He tells Schanke
in no uncertain terms to stick to the day
shift. "What's his problem?" Schanke asks
Jack. Comes the reply, "I don't think you
want to know."

Nick visits a chic nightclub and is barred
from entering until he shows his strength
by picking the doorman up by his belt. Once
inside, he approaches the club's owner, Janette.
She calls him Jean-Pierre, and they speak
briefly of their time in Paris. When she
offers him a glass of blood mixed with wine,
Nick is tempted, but refuses, drawing Janette's
disgust for him and his job as a cop. Nick
changes the subject by asking where LaCroix
can be found. Janette scribbles the information
he needs on a napkin and just before giving
it to him she warns, "I'd be careful if I
were you. He's very disappointed."

As Nick is about to leave the club, he discovers
that Alyce Hunter has been following him.
They become quickly surrounded by other male
vampires who are attracted to the pretty
mortal. One attempts to challenge Nick for
her by grabbing his shirt, briefly exposing
a scar on his chest. Nick pushes him away,
then walks Alyce out of the club. When he
jumps into his car parked out front, she
jumps in too, determined to stick with him
no matter what.

As Nick drives, Alyce shows him the hundred-year-old
picture she found in an archeological book
that resembles him down to the scar on his
chest. She accuses him of being a vampire
until Nick convinces her that his resemblance
to the picture is pure coincidence and his
knowledge of ancient artifacts and hieroglyphs
came from college studies. Embarrassed, Alyce
apologizes for getting carried away. A moment
later, Nick is stunned to hear LaCroix's
voice over the radio. He addresses Jean-Pierre,
telling him, "The Nightcrawler's waiting
for you. I know you're out there."

Nick drives to the radio station and tells
Alyce to stay behind in the car while he
goes inside. LaCroix unlocks the door for
Nick using a remote, then leads him through
the building and out the back door. From
a safe distance, Alyce follows their movements
as they enter a nearby slaughterhouse. LaCroix
shows Nick that he has the jade goblet, fills
it from a vat of cow's blood and drinks.
He then begins to chastise his "brother"
for running away and turning his back on
his vampire nature.

LaCroix maliciously pours blood on Nick's
face and tries to make him lick it off. When
Nick refuses, LaCroix angrily tosses him
to the ground and threatens him with decapitation.
Nick happens to look up and spot Alyce on
a catwalk above them. LaCroix follows his
gaze as Nick instructs her to run.

LaCroix flies up and hangs onto a pipe, asking
Nick which one he prefers to save, the girl
or the goblet. He lets go of the goblet,
and as it crashes to the floor, Nick vamps
out and flies into the air to attack his
master. The two tussle for a moment, then
Nick manages to shove his enemy away. LaCroix
sails backwards and becomes impaled on several
long, metal spikes hanging on the wall. While
struggling in a vain attempt to free himself,
LaCroix accidentally bashes a hole in the
wall allowing sunlight to enter. Nick shields
himself from the sun and watches as LaCroix
is scorched by the rays and soon becomes
motionless.
