#8 - Part 4

As the battle ends between the two vampires,
Alyce runs out of the building to safety.
Nick leaves soon after, but is forced to
take refuge in the trunk of his car for the
day. When the illegally parked Caddy is impounded,
Schanke goes to pick it up. He decides to
drive the Caddy to the hospital blood bank
to follow up a hunch he has about the murder
victims, completely unaware that he has a
passenger in the trunk.

While Schanke attempts to get information
about blood donors from an uncooperative
duty nurse, Nick has slipped out of the trunk
and is doing a little snooping into the hospital
computer records. As Schanke continues to
cajole the nurse into bending the rules,
the man who took blood from him at the precinct
happens by. Realizing that Schanke is getting
close to the truth, Fenner makes casual conversation
to verify the type of car the detective is
driving, then goes into the parking lot and
cuts the brake line on Nick's Caddy. He clears
the parking lot with his own keys jingling
loudly only seconds before Nick returns.

Back on the road, Schanke finds out the hard
way that the brakes aren't working. The car
collides with several objects before he's
able to bring it to a safe stop. The Caddy
gets banged up quite a bit and Nick gets
jostled about in the trunk, but is otherwise
unhurt. The Caddie is towed back to the police
garage where Nick soon makes his presence
known. Although upset about the damage done
to his ride, he knows that the accident was
not Don's fault, and that Schanke was right
about the case they've been working on.

Unable to reach Nick by phone, Alyce goes
over to his loft. Remembering Nick mention
that some hieroglyphs he saw at the museum
used the same digits as his alarm code, Alyce
is able to let herself in. While there, she
hears the elevator and assumes that Nick
has arrived. Instead, she finds an injured,
disoriented Jeanie. Meanwhile, Nick and Schanke
return to the hospital, reasoning that the
person who sabotaged the Caddy is their murderer.
While questioning the duty nurse, Nick nearly
collapses from hunger, but insists that he'll
be all right. He's more interested in catching
the killer than worrying about his own health.

Back at the loft, Alyce calls for an ambulance,
then starts a fire in the fireplace and wraps
a blanket around Jeanie to keep her warm.
At the hospital, with help from the duty
nurse, Nick and Schanke identify a likely
suspect in Jack Fenner, a man whose mother
died from hepatitis after receiving some
infected, donated blood. Apparently, he blames
all the homeless blood donors with O-negative
blood for the death of his mother. After
putting out an APB on Jack Fenner, Nick calls
home to check his messages. Alyce picks up
and tells him about Jeanie.

Assuming that the paramedics are on their
way up in the elevator, Alyce has Nick to
hold the line while she unwittingly goes
to greet the killer. Jack Fenner immediately
attacks her, striking her with his fist and
sending her hurtling over a table onto the
floor. Hearing her screams, Nick informs
Schanke that Fenner is at his place and to
meet him there. He then rushes to the rescue,
leaving Schanke to wonder how he plans to
get there.
